I’ve always wanted to paint digitally, not just “color” a comic or illustration. I’ve had quite a few failed attempts at it. Then recently I found some process videos by Daniel Lieske, an amazing artist who also has a webcomic that you definitely should check out called “The Wormworld Saga.” The artwork is beautifully painted – every panel.

I had tried to add some painterly effects to strips in the past, but I really never knew what I was doing. Also, it takes long than the traditional way I color things. Anyway, watching Daniel’s videos helped me to understand his process and I really wanted to give it a try. I’ve already had one failed attempt, but I think this second attempt might be on the right track.

What we have here is John in the cockpit of his ship. It seems Asimov is not in his proper seat. Maybe John is the cause of this? I don’t have a title for this yet, maybe you all can suggest one. The piece at this stage is at the drawing stage. I’ve done the “premlim” grayscale layer, then drew over that. (Truth is I did a sketch first, then prelim, then redrew). The next stage is to begin painting it.

For my birthday this year I asked for, and received some Molotow paint markers. They are these really cool markers that literally paint with this great acrylic paint on practically anything. I really wanted to try them out.

So I finally had the chance to pull them out today and do a little “painting” of Asimov on an 8 x 10″ ish board. It was loads of fun! The markers handle beautifully, and my only regret is that I didn’t know quite what colors and quantities of each to order. The paint in the smaller 2mm markers runs out fast. (You can buy refills). I learned a few lessons while using them, though, and I really like them.

I thought it would be a neat way to do some truly unique Marooned art, as you can literally paint on any surface. Hmm, custom orders perhaps?! (Send me your shoes!)

Anyway, I’m not quite sure if this is done, but I like the way it looks. The colors aren’t quite exact in the picture as they are in truth, but they are close. I may order some more colors to finish it off. Then I may auction it off. We’ll see.

On what kinds of things would it be cool to do a little Marooned painting?

Anyway, here’s a crack at a little Ugo painting. I may play around with it some more. This is probably the best I’ve ever done, which unfortunately doesn’t say much!

I had to resort to the smudge tool to blend colors. This is really not the proper way to do things, but I’m stuck on that point and cannot get it done any other way.

I got inspired a bit by Scott Kurtz jumping into some painting so I figured I give it a try. I’ve done a bit of acrylic painting before and I’m just not good at it, I really don’t know the mechanics of painting. So all I did was make a “painted comic” panel. Didn’t quite have the right brushes so the lines aren’t quite right, but it came out okay. It’s hanging above my PC where I’ll probably add one of Asimov and Ugo too. Have to get a couple better brushes first. Would anyone be interested in this sort of thing?
