Fleshly Meat

You may notice some color/style changes in the strip over the next few weeks. I’m still trying to find the style that I originally envisioned this strip portraying. I feel like it has gotten a bit too detailed and that I’m overdrawing it and the colors are way too saturated. I think it will be better if it’s a bit simpler. Hopefully you will too!

WebComic Reader Awards on Frumph.net

Over at Frumph.net they are running some WebComic reader awards. I am listed on their site. It’s a lot to ask, but if you think the strip is worthy and would like to nominate me, I’d appreciate you going over to this page on Frumph and signing up and sending in a nomination. I believe their staff does the final voting, but more nominations help.

you should find some balance between the overload of details and the slacker copypaste-type strips. it all depends of how much time and effort are you willing to expend on it.

Well I don’t want it to be a copypaste type look, and I’m hoping you don’t see this one as that type. I draw everything you see. What I’m more getting at is that one, I think the colors were too saturated for this type of comic, it felt too “heavy” to me. I also don’t think it will reproduce well come book time. Secondly, the extra attention given to variation of line and adding certain detail – I don’t think it’s necessary. I think it’s time better spent in making the strip better compositionally. It may not be a big difference in time for me for production, but hopefully the look of the strip will be more sound as a whole.

I finally remembered to check the comic on the day it updates! And in the morning! And, amazingly, same with “Imy” too! obligatory ZOMG!
However, I forgot about some comics having comment systems until one in the afternoon. ¬_¬

Anyway, about the comic, you took and old and over-used joke and made it decent. It was clever and got a giggle from me but I have to take points away for the age of the joke. (Sorry, I know I’m a harsh critic. :/)

I smell stew! Nice choice of colors. Well done, sir.

Thanks Wit! Gonna try this mode for a bit and see how it goes.

One thing I did that really informed my color choices was to print out some of my comics at a local copy shop. For whatever reason, things that look “okay” on the web can look super over saturated in print. Unless you want to adjust the color levels for every comic before printing, it’s best to just get it right now. Concerning the line quality, I’m a big fan of line variation. But you probably knew that from my work. I use a dip pen to naturally get a varying line, but it CAN be done with microns (or similar pens). This video of Dave Kellett shows some great examples of how to do this: http://www.vimeo.com/1496263.

By the way, your book is in the mail. You should be getting it soon.

Finally, are you part of “Palace in the Sky” now? I see you have their PW ad spot on your site.

Good idea Tony – been thinking of doing some prints in any case just for fun. In the end the decision is as much about time as look – in this case they both serve my interest (more detailed info in my Friday Fandom post). I’ve seen Dave’s video. I love a variation in line, but it’s not my strong point, and I just think simpler is better in this case.

(Also – I was using Microns and Faber Castells – still am in fact). Used a dip pen before but it’s too time consuming.

Palace – yes I got an invite last night. I’ve sent over some stuff and got the PW ads running as you see. Not fully set up yet but looking forward to it. Not sure how they found me. Barb from Xylia was actually going to put in a word for me and then I got an e-mail from them before she could do it.

Hehe!Considering that they’ve probably never tasted meat, I don’t think he has anything to worry about! But maybe he should sleep with one eye open for a while just to be sure ;)

I know what you mean about colors. I am always struggling with my colors. Too bright? Too dull? Do they compliment each other? Do they burn people’s eyes? It’s really irritating!

I like Tony’s idea of getting something printed. I want to try. I wish copy shops were as easy to find here as they are in the US.

There has to be something online that’s workable. If I find something good I will let you know.

you got me wrong. i’m not saying that you copypaste, but if you’ll do it, it will get a lot of stress from your shoulders in the drawing department. and takes away a lot from the uniqueness.
the colors are fine, btw. :)

    Ah got ya :)
