As I mentioned, I worked out the design of the Dark Ones months ago. I began with some sketches, which as you will see look nothing like the current design, then moved to what I thought I liked. Then I did my first sculpture using Sculpey. The sculpture is basically to help me visualize where things are when I am drawing them. They are kind of odd looking creatures, and I don’t quite have them down yet.
The first sketches I did had a biped in mind, but I decided that I wanted to do something a little more unique. I do find the inked guy interesting though.

Then I came up with the idea of a tripod creature. I realized he was too stretched vertically here, but I figured out the legs.

Finally I got the proportions where I liked them. These sketches are pretty much what they are now. You can also see a little bit of Floopy in there.

Once I had the sketch down, I did the sculpture. It’s not great, but it serves its purpose.

Hope you enjoyed this little peek behind the scenes. I will probably include this stuff printed up bigger and in hi-res in a future comic book as bonus material.

It’s like looking at Behind the Scenes at Star Wars!
That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Low budget version
more than enough budget marooned
You are definitely an artist of more than one medium; the sculpture is fantastic.
Thanks Daniel!
The image above the first sculpture picture looks like the coolest Muppet ever.
I think if you’re ever hard up for cash you could easily sell that sculpture on Ebay. Its really cool.
Thanks Evan! I really like that design a lot, I just felt it wasn’t right for what I needed.
