Speed Racer and the Mach 5

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

NOTE: I’ve had more than a few people e-mail and ask about getting the 3d file for this model. Right now it’s buried somewhere on a CD in storage. I have no idea if and when I’ll have time to dig it out. Even if I do, it’s not a polygon model - it’s a spline model. That means unless you are using Hash Animation:Master, you’re out of luck. So I suggest if you really want a Mach 5 3d model - you make one! ;)

Well, I was a huge Speed Racer geek when I was a kid, so I’m really looking forward to the movie tomorrow. I’ve already purchased myself a little Mach 5 toy that I’ve been zooming around my desk in anticipation. So to celebrate the movie, here’s a 3D model of the Mach 5 I did a few years ago in Hash Animation:Master while I was learning the software. They ended up putting on their demo CD and I even got a free jacket out of it. I only wish it were in my garage!

Edit: Found a bunch of renders of the Mach 5 in 3D in various states of progress, including a final one done with some “show models” by a John B. where he took my model and mixed it with his girls. I’ve added those as well.

Mars Sunset… Wait! Who is that!?

On May 19, 2005, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured this stunning view as the Sun sank below the rim of Gusev crater on Mars… and it captured something else as well! (Hmm, does this explain why a manned mission was sent… makes you wonder…)
