Hey folks, Marooned will return on Tuesday, January 3rd. In the meantime, I thought you might enjoy a look into the process I currently use to create a panel. Since I began to work digitally, my process has actually expanded to 8 steps, and I believe has helped me improve as an artist.

I’m excited to officially announce my next book project: Dr. Ugofandian’s Unbelievable Adventures! (Volume 1)! I had mentioned this previously a week or so ago, but now we’ve got a working title and I can give you all the details.
The main purpose of the book is to present two key stories. First, the second part of Lian’s story after she crashed on Mars, which was first told in part 1 in “Payload” by the wonderful Steve Ogden, published in Out of Orbit. Obviously, Steve will be doing the next part of that story. We’re guessing it’s something like 6-8 pages. However this will be combined with “Payload” and published together as one narrative, so figure a 12-14 page story. A panel from “Payload” below:
Next is my own Marooned side story called “Robot School.” This will be the story of how Asimov, Hogan and Bob went to school to learn how to deal with humans, in order to decide who would be chosen to go to Mars. I just published the sketch of Professor Capek, who will be their instructor. I don’t have much to show you at this very early stage, but of course we’ll be seeing more of THIS guy:
Next, I’m excited to announce a sci-fi crossover! The uber-talented James Anderson will be doing an Ellie/Marooned crossover story! To whet your appetite, here’s a fun little sketch Jim sent me a bit ago from his sketchbook:
Next, some time ago I talked about a Marooned side project with the amazing Denver Brubaker titled “Princess of Mars.” Denver got crazy busy and we had to abandon that. However, he’s re-thought the design and story a bit, and he’s on board for the book! So expect a Princess of Mars story in this super cool style like the sketch below:
Last but not least, my daughter Amanda will be doing an illustration of Dr. Ugofandian and Floopy – sure to be a hit! I may possibly be able to add a couple more collaborators yet, we’ll see. In any event, expect something like a 30-40 page book. It will be printed via CreateSpace.com.
The idea of the book is to have a series of sci-fi/Marooned stories, kind of like the old Tales of Suspense comics. Dr. Ugofandian will be your narrator/presenter. As for time period, well – we’re tentatively saying “Spring-ish” – so think at the very earliest May, but probably later. This is a side project for all of us, so we’ll get it done as we can. But I would hope you’d see the book by summertime at the latest. We hope to blow your mind with great fun and great art!
Hope your looking forward to reading this as much as I am looking forward to working with these awesome artists. I’ll keep you posted from time to time.
One of the best days of the year for us artists is New Year’s Day – because Comicraft has their annual font sale. This means you can buy ANY font on their site for a paltry $20.12! I mean ANY font, even if it’s $140 or more. This is an amazing deal, because they put out seriously PRO fonts. This stuff is awesomely designed, top notch work. Check out the site, and click on one of the numbers on the home page for info on the sale.
While the fonts are geared toward comic artists, there’s plenty of stuff here that works great for any design project. This year I am planning on grabbing the Rocket Man font for my project “Robot School” – I can’t wait!

No comic today, things have been too busy to find time for that amount of work. I expect next Thursday we shall be back on schedule. I have had some time to sit and sketch with my girls, and I worked on some designs for “Robot School” – the Marooned side story I am working on. I have a design for the professor that I am pretty happy with, so I wanted to share. Here he is – Professor Capek!

I’ve been thinking about how I might put together the “Big Book” of Marooned once this story finishes. One problem is that the format switches from 3-panel gag, to the larger double size landscape format to finally the more traditional size I am using today. This makes it a little problematic to really publish them all together and have it all look as good as I’d like.
One solution is simply to rework the strips into the regular page size. I’m not talking about really redrawing anything (except in instances where I simply can’t live with something) but rather re-arranging panels. While doing that, it would make sense to also make the coloring consistent, by fixing John and Asimov (and in some cases, Lian’s) uniforms. It would also give me the opportunity to fix a few things in the story, and even to add a few pages here and there to flesh things out (or to add to the story.)
The truth is, as I got to the more recent double-sized ones, this would become more difficult as I played around more with panel layouts. There are 272 strips that would need to be adjusted. If I say that’s an average of an hour per strip (earlier ones being easier, later not so much) and rounding up for really tough ones, I get nearly 13 full days of rework! Yikes. But in some ways… I’d love to do it – to have that full book.
I don’t know if people would have any interest in that or not. But I played around with the first strip, and here is the result. Click for the full view.
Hmm.. I noticed I forgot to add his patch!
I got a wonderful surprise when I got home last night. As you know my daughter Amanda is becoming quite an artist, but you may not know that my other daughter Sarah is ALSO becoming quite an artist, too! She is drawing more and more and every time she shows me a piece of art, it’s better and better. Well when I got home, she showed me this AWESOME piece of fan art, it’s Lian as a little girl, dreaming of someday going to the stars. How cool is that?! Thank you so my Sarah my dear, you ROCK!

With the end of the year approaching, it seems everyone has a list to talk about. Since I’m in the business of webcomics, why not talk about webcomics, right? I’m a fairly avid reader of comics online, and I’d say I have close to 30 in my reading list. Certainly I follow some more than others, and some are on hiatus and not updating. And it does seem like I discover a new one to at least check out for awhile every month or so.
So I decided to put together a “must read” list of the top 15 comics I enjoy. These are basically the ones that I make it a point never to miss, if possible. Certainly no comic is perfect (although there are a few on here that are mighty close), so I will give you my pros and cons of each one. I’ve certainly mentioned some of these before, so I won’t belabor that point.
Keep in mind these are in no particular order – just the top 15. Here we go:
Whew! Well there you have it. Hopefully I’ve pointed you to something you haven’t seen yet. These comics are all done by fine artists and writers and deserve at least a chance at winning you over, so go take a look!

Today in my Teen Art Studio class I talked about how to work up to a finished panel by starting with a thumbnail, working through a rough sketch, a drawing, and finally the final inking and coloring. Here’s the finished piece. It was fun!

Happy Friday one and all! I hope you are all getting into the Christmas Spirit, I know I am! We’ve got a good start on our Christmas Video schedule, having enjoyed the Grinch, Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas, Muppet Christmas Carol (so awesome) and The Snowman last night. I think tonight we’re going to watch the Anime “The Girl Who Leaped Through Time.” Not Christmas related, but looks good!
I wanted to update you on some projects in the cooker. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not sure what comes after this episode of Marooned. One thing I do know is that I want to do a graphic novel with a new story. I think that regardless of what happens with Marooned, I will probably attempt to do the graphic novel anyway. I’ve been mulling ideas on this for quite some time. I think I have an idea I can finally run with, although it’s pretty early in the process. The good thing is I haven’t woken up one day thinking “aw, that idea is rubbish!” So that’s a good sign.
I can’t really tell you anything about it right now. But I have been doing a lot of sketching trying to flesh out characters. Here’s a rough workup of what would be two of the main characters (at least at this point.)

They change nearly every time I draw them at this point. But I’m liking the direction.
Some of you may recall that I talked about a story called “Beam City” in the past. For awhile, good friend and awesome artist Steve Ogden and I talked about doing a graphic novel of that story. We were going to write it together, Steve was going to do the art and I was going to do the coloring. Well, we kind of realized were nuts thinking we had the time to do this at this stage of things! Maybe someday in the future we’ll be able to do it, who knows. In the meantime, here’s part of a test page Steve drew and inked. He totally blew me away with it and I just wanted to share it with you guys.

Pretty cool huh?
But there’s good news. Steve and I are actually working on a more reasonably sized project. Many of you will remember the story “Payload” that appeared in my first book (and is available as a digital download for .99 cents).

That 5-pager told the story of how Lian crashed on Mars. But… what happened next? How did the Mindstone get attached to her? While Lian gives us a brief mention of it while working out her problems in “Lianworld,” we don’t get the full story. Well, that’s what we’ll get in the next story! Steve thinks it will be something like an 8-page story. That will be coupled with the current 5-page Payload story and renamed. So you’ll have that 13-page story, written by myself and Steve, but drawn and colored by Steve.
In conjunction with that, I’ll be working on a story going along with that tentatively called “Robot School.” How did Asimov and Hogan learn to get along with humans? How did they train for the mission? And how in the world did they meet Bob?! Well, these questions will be answered in “Robot School!” I’m not sure how long of a story it will be, but I’m guessing in the 10-15 page range.
Couple that with some extra pieces of art (I have a fun pinup James Anderson of Ellie gave me over the summer already) yet to be determined, and we should have a nice little bonus Marooned book for you! I’m hoping it will be somewhere around 30 pages. We’ll print it via CreateSpace, so it will be a nice book like the Out of Orbit and Mars Wars reprints.
When will this be done? Ha! Who knows. We’ve begun the writing process. Steve will work on it as he has time, and same with me with my story. But I will keep you updated of the progress. But hopefully you should be able to grab this book sometime next year. Hopefully you are as excited as I am about it!
