The good news is that the Ashcan is pretty much done. I’m trying to gauge how many books I should print for the first edition, plus understand the reasons why people might not want to order one. I’m thinking for the first edition I might toss in a free simple sketch for those orders.
So here’s the breakdown of the Ashcan:
- Color cover (and back cover)
- 20 pages of content, including strips #1-15
- Every strip has special creator commentary (kind of like special features in a DVD)
- Center spread has a BONUS brand new full size comic. A little scenario from Asimov and John’s training days. (Teaser below)
- The “Marooned Vault” – two pages of development strips from before the comic was produced with commentary, and a sketch of an early John model with a slightly different uniform.
- The comic is 8.5″ x 5.5″ in size.
Teaser from Bonus Strip

I’m thinking that’s a lot of content to shove into a minicomic. I had a good time putting it together and the couple people I showed it to have had a very positive response. If this goes well, I plan do continue doing them until I am caught up with all the strips.
What is the price for this awesome ashcan? $4 plus shipping. I’m thinking Shipping should be one dollar or less, so you should be able to get this delivered to you (in the continental U.S.) for $5 or slightly under. (I still have to hit the Post Office to find out the actual price.)
NOTE: I will be happy to ship books internationally, as long as you pay for the shipping. Generally Priority Mail is actually fairly reasonable, especially for a smaller package.
So that’s the deal. Please answer the poll below so I can get an idea of how many to run for a first print. The only thing I have left to do is order the envelops and date and number the strips.

You need another option in the poll. Something like, “Not until the Australian dollar is worth more than a wooden nickel”
LOL, sorry, maybe you can send me 80 wooden nickels!
The whole process to create this ashcan book seems really cool. I don’t know if creating an official comic book would have allowed you to be as hands on and receive near instant gratification in the same way.
Yep, that’s a big reason why I like doing this stuff on my own. I’ve had loads of fun doing it, and hopefully that will show up in the final product.
Will Pay Pal be an option in your store? You may have already mentioned this, but I don’t remember seeing it. Also, are those shirts in men’s sizes? Unisex sizing usually is, so it can make a difference to us gals. But then better too big than too small, at least at my age! Thanks
oh wow! the bonus is real nice!
Yes it will be a paypal store. I will probably take a check too if you don’t have paypal.
The shirts are these

I think they are unisex.
The Ashcan looks great, Tom. You did a fantastic job with it, put it together very quickly, and kept your update schedule while you were at it. I don’t know how you do it.
One word, Og.
STEROIDS.
Steroids. LOL! Seriously though, if you ever get stressed out, just let the comic slip a bit, we don’t mind. Better that than ‘roid rage.
About the achcan, it’s very fairly priced. Any penny pincher that says that’s too much could make diamonds out of coal juts by pinching it like they do their money. (Which, ironically, let’s them loosen their money pinch.)
That said, I want one. I’m not sure if I’ll get one. I’ll have to speak with my parents to see if I can be lent money. (I can afford it, just an interesting situation. Plus: why pay yourself when you can talk someone else into doing it? (yes, I’m a horrible person))
LOL Doug. Tell your parents this is a research project for when you make your own
