Well, it’s good to be back! So what’s the deal with Ugo, eh? Stay tuned.
Edit – forgot to mention.. since it’s been awhile with the holidays and all, John made the “flesh and blood” comment in strip 158.
Previously on Marooned…
While attempting to send a message to Earth, John fell ill. Ugo brought him to the Volotrum (also called The Dark Ones), his only remaining chance to be healed. The Listener, an apprentice of the Dark Ones – a human woman named Lian Fisher who crashed on Mars years ago – agreed to heal John. In doing so, she has fallen into some kind of coma. Meanwhile, the dangerous Krosa have attacked, and John, Ugo and Asimov are trying to help the Dark Ones repel them.

terminated?
Did John’s hair get more yellow along the way?
Oooh, nice sparkly effect around the gun. Come to think of it, there’s so many subtle shiny things in this strip. Strong start to the new year, I think.
@Chris – I used the old color palette, and yeah it’s a bit yellow. I may go back and fix it. You’d think at this point I’d be settled on my colors, but I’m still figuring things out.
Strip looks great! Lookit you go with the fancy lighting effects!
One question, though – what prompted the change to square word balloons?
Ah, forgot to mention that. I just wanted to try the squares – you see them in a lot of European comics. I don’t think I like it though. I read a Graphic Novel called Orbital, and I liked how it looked there, but it doesn’t seem to fit Marooned. I also thought it might be a time saver, but it really isn’t.
Also forgot to mention (added it to the post above) since it’s been awhile with the holidays and all, John made the “flesh and blood” comment in strip 158.
The square balloons just don’t look as good. I have no idea why. Usually I go for the cleaner look, but the ovals just look better for Marooned.
P.S. Loved the book and the sketch. Now proudly occupying the real estate on my coffee table.
Thanks Small! Glad you liked it
At some point I’ll fix the balloons on this one – and probably John’s hair color too.
Happy New Year Tom, great new page! I agree with Small Pearl, I prefer the rounded bubbles too.
Cool I’m glad it just wasn’t my eyes going on me. I think round balloons definitely worked better.
BTW is that the first instance of Pow that you’ve used in Marooned? If so that seems like a milestone!
Hm, it might be the first POW in fact. I’m channeling old Batman episodes!
NICE!!!
Hi Tom,
I’m new to the comments page but not to your comic. Great so far. Like how it’s gone from ‘gag a day’ to serious storyline (well, maybe not ’serious’). Must say the Ugo reveal was a surprise . . .
Keep up the good work . . .
Thanks Mike – so glad you checked in. Don’t be a stranger!
