This strip has been in my mind for over a year – longer than I waited to reveal Lian. I have no idea what the response will be, I’m very interested to see. My wife was completely shocked when she saw it. Ugo’s true nature has something to do with the overall story of Marooned. Let the speculation begin.
Marooned Returns Monday, January 4th!
I’ve decided to take a little break for the Christmas holiday. It comes at a perfect time actually. This strip marks the end of this “chapter” of events. When the strip returns, we’ll begin to get into how Ugo came to be, we’ll see what Lian is up to and a whole lot more. I may post some small things in the meantime (I have a picture of Lian to do for a good cause) so keep an eye out, too. I may also do another Christmas illustration this year, it just comes down to time.

Previously on Marooned…
While attempting to send a message to Earth, John fell ill. Ugo brought him to the Volotrum (also called The Dark Ones), his only remaining chance to be healed. The Listener, an apprentice of the Dark Ones – a human woman named Lian Fisher who crashed on Mars years ago – agreed to heal John. In doing so, she has fallen into some kind of coma. Meanwhile, the dangerous Krosa have attacked, and John, Ugo and Asimov are trying to help the Dark Ones repel them.

There was actually one reader who kind of guessed it a couple weeks ago in the comment thread (he said something like “It would be neat if Ugo was a robot or something). I was afraid people would see it and jump onto the idea, but apparently that didn’t happen.
Who indeed made Ugo? That is definitely something we will be exploring

Come to think of it, that would explain why Ril needs a shield on the surface and Ugo doesn’t. I didn’t buy Ugo’s excuse, but I dismissed it as phlebotinum before. Now it all makes sense

Yes, my daughter also remembered Ugo’s excuse to Ril about the bioshield. I was very surprised at the time that people didn’t make more of a fuss about that!
